California to Hawaii: master electrician license reciprocity

No credit· Start overVerified September 15, 2026· 10 sources

California does not issue a statewide master electrician license, so there is nothing to transfer. Here is Hawaii's standard path for out-of-state applicants.

Your origin state does not issue a statewide license at this level, so there is no license to transfer. The destination's standard out-of-state path is shown; expect to meet it in full.

Out-of-state journeyman or master license counted as equivalent experience, full Hawaii exam (all states)

Your out-of-state credentials give no advantage. You meet the destination's requirements from scratch.

Hawaii has no reciprocity or endorsement for supervising or master electricians from any state. An applicant who has been licensed as a journey worker or supervising-level electrician for at least four years in another county, state or country whose licensure requirements the Board finds substantially equivalent to Hawaii's meets the 'equivalent experience in the trade' prerequisite for the Supervising Electrician (ES) exam without first holding a Hawaii journey worker license for four years; the Board makes that determination when it reviews the application. The applicant files the $40 application with notarized Experience Verification forms from the licensed electricians under whom the work was done (or the licensed contractor, where that state licenses only contractors), License Verification forms from every jurisdiction where a license has ever been held, and, after Board approval at one of its bi-monthly meetings, registers with PSI for the open-book Hawaii supervising electrician exam. On passing, the license fee is $306 in the first year of the triennium (July 2026 to June 2027), $204 in the second and $102 in the third. No electrical coursework requirement applies to the supervising classes.

The Board publishes no list of states it considers substantially equivalent; equivalence is decided per application. An applicant whose out-of-state license is not accepted as equivalent would need four years registered as a Hawaii journey worker electrician first. The $95 exam fee is paid directly to PSI when scheduling.

How Hawaii licenses master electricians

Hawaii master electrician · “Supervising Electrician (ES)”

Statewide license

Issued by Hawaii Board of Electricians and Plumbers (DCCA Professional and Vocational Licensing Division)

Hawaii's highest personal electrician credential is the Supervising Electrician (ES) license, which HAR §16-80-4 requires of anyone who directs or supervises electrical work; Hawaii does not use the title 'master electrician' for electricians (the term is used only for plumbers). Under HRS §448E-5(b)(3) an ES applicant must have been registered with the Board as a journey worker electrician for at least four years or have equivalent experience in the trade, and must pass the PSI-administered supervising electrician exam. HAR §16-80-3 and the Board's application form define equivalent experience to include having been licensed as a journey worker or supervising-level electrician for at least four years in another county, state or country whose licensure requirements are substantially equivalent to Hawaii's, so an out-of-state journeyman or master license can satisfy the four-year prerequisite, but Hawaii does not reciprocate with any jurisdiction and the Hawaii exam is never waived. Parallel supervising classes exist for industrial (ESI, three years) and specialty (ESS, two years) electricians. A contractor's license under HRS ch. 444 is separately required to contract for electrical work. Licenses renew every three years by June 30 with an NEC update course.

Why California has nothing to transfer

California master electrician

No individual license at this level

Verified September 15, 2026· 10 sources

Issued by Contractors State License Board (contractor licensing only)

California does not issue a master electrician license or any personal electrician credential above the DIR General Electrician certification. The state-level credential above that is a C-10 Electrical Contractor license from the Contractors State License Board (CSLB), which is issued to a business (sole owner, partnership, corporation or LLC) and qualified by a named individual rather than held by the electrician personally, so an out-of-state master electrician has nothing to transfer to unless they intend to contract. A master electrician who only wants to work for an employer needs the DIR electrician certification described at the journeyman level. To contract independently the qualifying individual must document at least four years of journeyman-level or higher experience within the past 10 years, pay the $450 application fee, pass both the CSLB Law and Business exam and the C-10 trade exam through PSI within 18 months, be fingerprinted, post a $25,000 contractor's bond (plus a $25,000 bond of qualifying individual where applicable), carry workers' compensation or file an exemption, and pay the initial license fee of $200 (sole owner) or $350 (non-sole owner) for a two-year license. CSLB's reciprocity program covers contractors licensed for the previous five years in good standing in Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada or North Carolina, but only classifications on the Reciprocal Classifications List: for electrical work the only mapped classifications are Arizona C-11, K-11 and L-11 Electrical, which map to California C-10; Nevada's C-2 Electrical is not mapped (only Nevada C-2d Low Voltage maps to C-7), and the Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina entries cover only general building. Where reciprocity is granted CSLB may waive the C-10 trade exam but retains the right to require it, staff determine comparability case by case, and the Law and Business exam, bond, fingerprinting and all other licensure requirements still apply. A DIR electrician certification is not required for a licensed contractor's own work, only for electricians employed by C-10 contractors.
