Alaska has no master electrician license. Its highest person-held electrical credential is the Electrical Administrator license issued under AS 08.40 by the Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing (CBPL), which is treated here as the master level; CBPL describes it as a supervisory license required for at least one employee of every Alaska contractor doing NEC or NESC work, and it does not by itself allow the holder to perform that work (a journeyman certificate of fitness from the Department of Labor is needed for hands-on work). An electrical administrator is an individual who passes the PSI-administered administrator exam (70%) and meets category experience rules, for example four of the last six years as a journeyman electrician in inside commercial wiring for the Unlimited Commercial Wiring category (12 AAC 32.145); the license is issued in categories (Unlimited Linework Outside, Outside Communications, Unlimited Commercial Wiring, Inside Communications, Residential Wiring, Controls) and the holder may be assigned to only one registered contractor. The administrator license does not by itself allow the holder to perform code work; administrators who also hold a journeyman COF from the Department of Labor function like a master electrician in other states. Fees are $150 to apply plus $170 for the biennial license, which expires December 31 of odd-numbered years.

Electrical Administrator license by examination (Unlimited Commercial Wiring)

Alaska has no master electrician license; the Electrical Administrator license, issued by the Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing, is the supervisory credential treated here as the master level, and its Unlimited Commercial Wiring category covers all inside wiring work. The usual route is at least four of the six years before you apply working as a journeyman electrician in inside commercial wiring, holding an Alaska journeyman certificate of fitness or an equivalent certificate from another jurisdiction. You apply on form 08-4898 with $320 in fees; once the division approves you, you take the PSI Unlimited Commercial Wiring Administrator exam, an open-book, 100-question, four-hour test that requires 70% and includes questions on Alaska statutes and regulations. The license is issued once a passing score from the previous 12 months is on file. It lets you supervise electrical work for one registered contractor but not perform it yourself, so administrators who also do hands-on work keep a journeyman certificate from the Department of Labor.

Each category has its own experience rule and exam; for example, Residential Wiring requires two of the last four years as a journeyman residential wireman. A year of experience means at least 1,500 hours worked within 12 consecutive months. PSI eligibility lasts one year from the division's eligibility letter, with unlimited attempts in that year. Allowed references include the 2020 National Electrical Code, the 2013 NFPA 72, OSHA 29 CFR 1926 and the Alaska statutes and regulations; they may be highlighted and permanently tabbed beforehand but not written in during the exam. The application asks professional fitness questions about criminal history and past license discipline, and a yes answer must be explained with court or board documents. The license must be assigned to a single Alaska-registered contractor, or held in unassigned status.

Who can apply

Other ways to qualify

Each of these replaces the requirements above. You only need one.

Field superintendent experience, alone or combined with journeyman work

Construction management experience as a field superintendent or similar position in inside wiring for at least four of the six years before the application qualifies, as does any combination of that management experience and journeyman electrician work in inside commercial wiring that adds up to four of the six years.

Electrical engineering degree plus one year

A degree in electrical engineering from a nationally or regionally accredited college or university, plus at least one of the three years before the application working as a journeyman electrician or field engineer in inside commercial wiring. The school must send official transcripts directly to the division.

Alaska professional electrical engineer plus one year

Registration in Alaska as a professional electrical engineer, plus management experience in the electrical construction industry as a field engineer or similar position for at least one of the three years before the application.

Three years as a journeyman plus inspection, teaching or coursework

Three of the six years before the application as a journeyman electrician in inside commercial wiring, plus one of the following: a year during those six years as a certified state or municipal electrical inspector, a year as a full-time electrical instructor at an accredited or Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education approved school, or completion of a curriculum related to inside commercial wiring that the division accepts.

Steps to get licensed

  2. 2License fee. Pay the license or certificate fee ($170). License fee for all or part of the initial two-year license period.
  3. 3Trade exam. Pass the destination's trade exam. PSI Alaska Unlimited Commercial Wiring Administrator exam: 100 questions, 240 minutes, open book with approved references, 70% to pass; includes questions on Alaska statutes and regulations.
  4. 4Exam fee. Pay the exam fee ($150). PSI examination fee for each attempt, nonrefundable and valid for one year from payment.

Published fees on this path total $470, excluding exam-vendor fees, bonds, and insurance.

Keeping it active

Every 2 years with 8 hours of continuing education per cycle and a $170 renewal fee.

At least one eight-hour workshop, or an equivalent approved correspondence or individual study program, on the National Electrical Code adopted in Alaska, completed during the licensing period. Not required if you passed a licensing exam on that code during the period.

Licenses expire on December 31 of odd-numbered years regardless of when they were issued; a license issued within 90 days of that date runs to the next expiration.
