Where a Indiana home inspector license transfers

Indiana licenses home inspectors statewide. The Home Inspectors Licensing Board sets the requirements under IC 25-20.2 and 878 IAC 1, and the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency processes the applications and holds the records; nobody may conduct a home inspection for compensation without the license. It is a single credential issued to an individual, with no apprentice, associate or trainee grade below it and no separate firm, company or entity license, so a home inspector arriving in Indiana applies for the one thing. The license is also the only one that can be demanded: IC 25-20.2-7-2 bars every other state agency and every political subdivision from imposing its own registration or licensing requirement on a licensed home inspector, or charging a license or employment fee for the work. Two things are required of everyone and are worth knowing before you plan the move: a general liability policy of at least $100,000 naming you personally and naming the Board as certificate holder, and a pass on the National Home Inspector Examination, which is the only examination the Board has adopted. Licenses run on a biennial cycle and expire on 1 October of odd-numbered years.
