Moving to Alaska as a home inspector: every state's rule

Alaska registers home inspectors statewide through the Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing. The credential is a certificate of registration rather than a license, and it sits inside the construction contractor framework: AS 08.18 is headed Construction Contractors and Home Inspectors, and the bond and insurance an inspector files are the same machinery the chapter uses for contractors. One certificate covers the whole state, and it is issued in one of three areas: existing homes, new homes, or a joint registration covering both. Beneath it sits the Associate Home Inspector, a junior registration that cannot stand alone. An associate may inspect only while employed and supervised by a registered home inspector who holds the same category, that inspector is liable by statute for the associate's work, and the associate needs no examination, bond or insurance of their own. So the full Home Inspector registration is the one an experienced inspector moving to Alaska applies for. Alaska sets no pre-license education requirement and no experience requirement at all: the gate is the examination, a $10,000 bond or an accepted security in its place, public liability and property damage insurance, and the fees. Registrations run two years and expire on 30 June of even-numbered years whatever month they were issued, and every inspector also needs an Alaska business license.
