Moving to Minnesota as a journeyman plumber: every state's rule

Plumbing exams are given at DLI's St. Paul office and regional test sites and have a 5.5-hour time limit; DLI does not publish the passing score or question count. After a failed exam you must wait 30 days before reapplying, and a retest needs a new application and fee. Up to 24 months of plumbing experience gained before you registered can count toward the four years, but only if some of it was in the 12 months immediately before registering, and the four years are forfeited if you do not take the exam within two years of completing them unless DLI grants a hardship extension. Experience from another state counts for no more than two years unless you first obtained a plumber's license there; experience in military service, in a DLI-approved plumbing education class, or as an apprentice in another state verified by that state's plumbing agency also counts. To work while gaining experience you must register with DLI as an unlicensed plumber ($14) and renew by June 30 each year with two hours of continuing education. Restricted journeyworker and restricted master licenses, valid only in cities and towns under 5,000 population, are separate credentials, as are medical gas certification, backflow tester certification and water conditioning licenses.
