Moving to Alabama as a master plumber: every state's rule

1. 1Other. Application for Examination - Master (in-state, rev. 01/2026), checking both Master Plumber and Business Law, with a signed Declaration of U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Presence of an Alien.
2. 2Exam fee. Pay the exam fee ($160). Non-refundable Master Plumber examination fee, paid to the Board.
3. 3Exam fee. Pay the exam fee ($100). Non-refundable business law examination fee, paid to the Board.
4. 4Trade exam. Pass the destination's trade exam. Alabama Master Plumber exam given by Prov: 100 questions, open book, on the 2021 International Plumbing Code; 70% required.
5. 5Law / code exam. Pass a law, rules, or code exam. Alabama business law exam given by Prov: 40 questions, open book, 70% required.
6. 6Application fee. Pay the application fee ($50). Initial application processing fee, paid with the Initial Application for Certificate - Master and both score letters within 90 days of passing both exams.
7. 7License fee. Pay the license or certificate fee ($175). Initial master certificate fee, paid with the same application.
8. 8Business license. Obtain a business license ($25) (if applicable). Business Registration Form naming you as Principal Master, if you are starting a plumbing company or becoming the Principal Master of an existing one; $25 for a new registration and $25 each year to renew.
