North Carolina home inspector · “Licensed Home Inspector”
Statewide license
Issued by North Carolina Home Inspector Licensure Board (NC Office of State Fire Marshal)
North Carolina licenses home inspectors statewide. The North Carolina Home Inspector Licensure Board is established in the Department of Insurance and runs its licensing program through the Office of State Fire Marshal, and a license is needed to perform a home inspection for compensation or to call yourself a licensed home inspector. The license is personal: the Board issues it only to an individual and never to a company, although a licensed inspector may inspect for or trade as a firm. There is one tier. The Act used to carry a second, subordinate Associate Home Inspector license, but the General Assembly stopped new applications for it after 1 April 2011, stopped issuing it on 1 October 2011 and ended renewals on 1 October 2013, so Home Inspector is now the only credential the Board issues and there is no junior grade to arrive into. Every licensee carries general liability insurance of $250,000 and, on top of that, one of three things: minimum net assets set by the Board, a surety bond of at least $5,000, or errors and omissions insurance of $250,000. Licenses expire on 30 September each year, and renewal depends on continuing education and on the insurance staying in force.
