Moving to Utah as a journeyman plumber: every state's rule

The written exam has 100 questions in 4 hours and covers drain, waste and vent, water supply, fuel gas, fixtures, safety and plumbing math; the 2024 International Plumbing Code, International Fuel Gas Code and International Mechanical Code are among the permitted references. It can be taken at a Prov testing center in Utah or remotely through Prov's Examroom service. The practical exam is two projects, a copper and a plastic pipe assembly, in 2.5 hours, scored pass/fail, and is given only in Salt Lake City, Ogden and St. George; you bring your own tools and materials, and failing either project means retaking the whole exam. Program students may sit the exams after finishing the first semester of the fourth year, while enrolled in the final semester, with at least 6,000 hours, but the license needs all 8,000. Since January 2026 you attach the Verification of Plumber Experience form to your Prov registration, candidates from an approved Utah program must be cleared by their school before scheduling, and out-of-state program graduates attach their transcripts. After a failed exam you may retake it after 30 days, up to six failures, and after 120 days for each failure after that. No more than 3,000 hours are credited per 12-month period, and hours earned outside Utah need official license verification from the jurisdiction where they were earned. The application asks about past discipline and criminal history, and any yes answer must be documented. DOPL also issues a Residential Journeyman Plumber license (432 program hours plus 6,000 hours, or 12,000 hours of maintenance or repair work including 9,000 in plumbing) with its own residential written exam.
