Moving to Utah as a journeyman electrician: every state's rule

The written exam has 100 questions with a 240-minute limit and covers the National Electrical Code, electrical theory and calculations, and Utah licensing law and rules; the 2023 NEC, Ugly's Electrical References and the Utah licensing statutes and rules may be used as references. The practical exam has six pass/fail tasks (torque setting, transformer termination, conduit bending, commercial motor control, 3-way and 4-way switch wiring, and schematic reading and wiring) in 130 minutes, with no references allowed; candidates bring their own tools, and a passed task does not have to be retaken. On the training-program route you may sit the exams once the program is complete and at least 6,000 of the 8,000 hours are done. Since January 1, 2026, journeyman candidates must be approved for testing by the school where they trained before scheduling for the first time. After a failed exam you may retake it after 30 days, up to six failures, and after 120 days for each failure after that. No more than 3,000 hours of experience are credited per 12-month period, and hours earned outside Utah need official verification from the jurisdiction where they were earned. The application asks about past discipline and criminal history, and any yes answer must be documented.
