Utah issues a statewide Master Electrician license through DOPL under Utah Code 58-55 and Rule R156-55b. There are no signed master-level reciprocity agreements; out-of-state masters apply by endorsement under Utah Code 58-1-302 if DOPL's Endorsement to Utah: Master Electrician map lists their license as equivalent, they have held it at least one year, and it is active and in good standing. Unlike the journeyman level, every master applicant, including endorsement applicants, must pass the Utah Master Electrician Law and Rule Examination with a score of at least 75%. Several states issue only an electrical contractor license; DOPL may endorse the individual who qualified as the contractor's responsible person. Applicants without an equivalent license use verified out-of-state journeyman hours toward the standard route.

Master Electrician by examination
A Utah Journeyman Electrician becomes a Master Electrician after 8,000 hours of work experience as a licensed journeyman, which Utah Code describes as four years, and passing the Utah Master Electrician Law and Rule Exam with a score of at least 75%. An associate of applied science from an approved electrical trade school reduces the journeyman experience to 4,000 hours. Utah also allows direct entry to master, without a journeyman license, for graduates of an EAC/ABET-accredited bachelor's or master's program in electrical engineering who have 2,000 hours as a licensed apprentice electrician. Prov administers the exam, and the DOPL application fee is $116.
The Law and Rule Exam has 80 questions with a 240-minute limit and covers Utah licensing law and rules, the National Electrical Code and Utah's NEC amendments, NFPA 70E, and Utah labor and workplace safety law; the listed code books, statutes and rules may be used as references. DOPL also lists the Utah Electrician Practical Exam for master applicants, waived for anyone who passed it at the journeyman level. No more than 3,000 hours of experience are credited per 12-month period, and hours earned outside Utah need official verification from the jurisdiction where they were earned. After a failed exam you may retake it after 30 days, up to six failures, and after 120 days for each failure after that.

Associate of applied science plus 4,000 journeyman hours
A graduate of an approved electrical trade school course of study with an associate of applied science degree qualifies after 4,000 hours of work experience as a licensed journeyman electrician, which Utah Code describes as two years.

Electrical engineering degree plus 2,000 apprentice hours
Graduates of an EAC/ABET-accredited bachelor's or master's program in electrical engineering may apply for the master license directly, without first holding a journeyman license, after 2,000 hours of work experience as a licensed apprentice electrician (one year under Utah Code). Because these applicants have not taken the Utah Electrician Practical Exam at the journeyman level, DOPL lists it for them alongside the Law and Rule Exam.

Steps to get licensed
- 1Application fee. Pay the application fee ($116). Non-refundable DOPL application-processing fee.
- 2Law / code exam. Pass a law, rules, or code exam. Utah Master Electrician Law and Rule Exam: 80 questions, 240 minutes, 75% to pass (Prov).
- 3Exam fee. Pay the exam fee ($85). Utah Master Electrician Law and Rule Exam fee, per attempt, paid to Prov.
- 4Trade exam. Pass the destination's trade exam (if applicable). Utah Electrician Practical Exam (six hands-on tasks, Prov), required only if you have not already passed it for a Utah journeyman license.
Published fees on this path total $201, excluding exam-vendor fees, bonds, and insurance.
Keeping it active
Every 2 years with 16 hours of continuing education per cycle and a $84 renewal fee.
At least 12 of the 16 hours must be core education: 8 hours on the National Electrical Code and 4 hours on NFPA 70E electrical safety. The remaining 4 hours may be core or professional courses. All courses must be approved by DOPL.
Utah electrical licenses expire on November 30 of even-numbered years and are renewed online through DOPL.
