Wyoming issues a statewide Master Electrician license through the Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety. To sit for the master exam an applicant documents eight years (16,000 hours) of work in the electrical wiring industry, of which four years (8,000 hours) were as a licensed journeyman, plus 576 hours of approved classroom instruction (or the 20,000-hour exemption), and must score 75% on the open-book NEC exam. The initial license fee is $200; the license runs three years, expiring July 1, and renews for $100 with 16 hours of approved continuing education, 8 of them on the NEC. A master electrician may serve as master of record for only one electrical contractor (W.S. 35-9-126). Wyoming has master-level reciprocity agreements with Idaho, South Dakota and Iowa only.

Master Electrician license by examination

A journeyman electrician becomes a Wyoming Master Electrician by documenting eight years (16,000 hours) of work in the electrical wiring industry, including at least four years (8,000 hours) as a licensed journeyman, and passing the master exam with a score of 75% or better. The work history must include planning, layout and NEC experience under a qualifying electrician for a licensed electrical contractor, across residential, commercial and industrial installations. The 576 hours of apprenticeship classroom instruction required for the journeyman license must also be documented. The open-book exam is given by the International Code Council (ICC) at Pearson VUE test centers once the department approves the application; after passing, the applicant uploads the pass letter and pays the $200 license fee.

The ICC master exam has 100 multiple-choice questions with a 5-hour limit and is based on the National Electrical Code, with Ugly's Electrical Reference and the other approved references allowed; there is no separate law or business exam. Confirm the NEC edition in ICC's exam catalog, since Wyoming now applies the 2026 NEC. A failed exam can be retaken after 10 days. Work history is documented the same way as for the journeyman license, with notarized employer letters or the Journeyman and Master Work Verification Form. A master electrician must work for a licensed electrical contractor and may serve as master of record for only one contractor.

Who can apply

Other ways to qualify

Each of these replaces the requirements above. You only need one.

10 years (20,000 hours) as a licensed electrician instead of classroom instruction

An applicant who cannot document the 576 classroom hours may qualify for the master exam with evidence of 10 years and 20,000 hours of on-the-job experience as a licensed journeyman or master electrician, if the Chief Electrical Inspector approves it.

Steps to get licensed

  1. 1Trade exam. Pass the destination's trade exam. Wyoming Master Electrician exam (ICC exam 701) at a Pearson VUE test center: 100 questions, 5 hours, open book; 75% required to pass.
  2. 2Exam fee. Pay the exam fee ($115). Pearson VUE examination fee, paid when scheduling the ICC exam.
  3. 3License fee. Pay the license or certificate fee ($200). Initial Master Electrician license fee, paid in the eLicense portal after uploading the exam pass letter; card payments carry a 2.5% processing fee (minimum $1).

Published fees on this path total $315, excluding exam-vendor fees, bonds, and insurance.

Keeping it active

Every 3 years with 16 hours of continuing education per cycle and a $100 renewal fee.

16 hours of Electrical Board-approved update training earned between the date the license is issued and the date it expires, at least 8 of them from a course that specifically covers the National Electrical Code.

The master license expires on July 1 in the third year after the year it was issued. Renewing within 45 days after expiration costs an additional $50.

Most boards contract PSI, Prov, or ICC for exams. Check which code edition the exam is written to before buying a prep course.
